Burton sailing club hosted the 7th Contender National travellers trophy event over the weekend of Sat. Sun. 20th/21st Aug.; sunny conditions prevailed throughout for the fifteen competitors (even though the summer hols had depleted the fleet).

Racing started promptly in a force 2/3. A beady eyed PRO spotted a couple of over zealous sailors pushing the line too hard resulting in OCS's. Rodger White and Martin Metcalfe benefited from some sneaky shifts up the first beat allowing them to finish in that order eventually followed home by Tim and Ben Holden.

Race two started with Sandy Clapham, Tim and Mike Rhodes having good first beats tailed by Bill Hooten. After a tight tussling match Hooten and Ben, Clapham survived to finish 3rd behind Rhodes and Tim.

Race three resulted in a 1,2 from Tim and Ben with Mike 'relative newcomer' Rhodes a solid 3rd.

After racing most people drifted back to the hospitality of the Hooten clan where drinking and dancing carried on in their living room to the amusement of their children.

Sunday arrived with decreased wind, an unsteady force 2. Clapham made the best start in race 4 eventually winning by a clear leg from Metcalfe and Tim.

With two discards, race five meant it was all to play for with Tim, Ben, Metcalfe and Clapham all with the chance of winning the event.

By this time the wind had become a little changeable. Metcalfe had the luck of leading round the second mark before the wind swung altering the leg to a beat. This gave him a clear break to go on to win the race and the event, followed home by Paul Ross, Ben and Tim.

Thanks to Burton Sailing Club for good courses under difficult conditions.
