The first round of the Contender Travellers Trophy was held at Datchet Water over the 19/20 March.

Soaring temperatures coupled with dire wind predictions failed to deter 24 Contenderer’s from enjoying the season’s opener.

Saturday’s sailing was abandoned with no sight of any real wind materialising, however the day was not an entire washout as the delays allowed for an extended ‘tune up and tips session’ by the National Champion Stuart Jones and his little helpers !.

Sunday morning, and as the mist lifted the wind picked up to variable 1-3.

Jones set his stall out early with a bullet in Race1, whilst Browett and Aston slugged it out for 2nd and 3rd.

Race 2 and the PRO was struggling to hold the fleet back on the pin end biased line. Cleanly away at the second attempt and again Jones sneaked out infront, this time chased by Langdown and Browett.

A quick turn around and no messing from the PRO resulted in the black flag rearing its ugly face for Race3!

Cleanly away at the first attempt and by the windward mark Lea had the lead. This was short lived with extremely close racing and by the leeward mark Browett had taken control. Even with rapid place changing throughout the fleet Browett was not to be denied and led home from Langdown, Jones and Gimmler.

The wind had picked up slightly for the final race but again it was Lea at the top mark first, followed by Jones and Aston. By now all those winter cobwebs had been truly blown away during the nip and tuck racing.

However, this wasn’t enough to depose Jones from overall as he wrapped up the event with another bullet followed home by Aston, Lea and Grace.
