Datchet Open - 15/16 March 2008

Datchet Water hosted the first event of Contender TT series, sponsored by Boats Bits of Huddersfield and North Sails, with an entry of 24 hardy souls.

The prelude to England thumping Ireland in the rugby was a painful, one lap drift around in practically no wind.
Aston lead at the top mark, had his lead extended after assistance from a mini twister generated by a low flying jumbo coming into land at Heathrow but was eventually reeled in and overtaken Browett and Gates after the gybe mark. Browett held on the to finish from Gates, Noble and Ross.

The weather gods shine on the righteous – and so it was that the exasperating fitful wind that Saturday brought was replaced by a gusty and chilly F6 on Sunday, ideal Contender breeze!

Race 2 and Aston lead at the top mark followed by Holden, Mussell and Jones. Holden extended his lead and was never caught after Aston went for his first icy dip along with many others as the gusty conditions played havoc off-wind. Jones, Browett and Aston completed the finish line minor places.

Holden took control in Race 3, defending a lead from start to finish. It was really mixed up further back as the conditions started to take their toll on the competitors – survival of the maddest! Browett sneaked in second ahead of Jones and Noble.

The final race was a limited affair but contained the main protagonist’s, as the event was still up for grabs.
Aston lead from almost start to finish, re- overtaking Browett on penultimate reach. Holden held off Jones for third which meant he won the event on count back from Browett.
