Contenders at Porthpean

Round 8 of the Contender Travellers Series was held at a very hospitable Porthpean SC on August 2nd and 3rd.  Sixteen visitors made the long trip from as far away as Burton, Thorpe Bay and Royal Cinque Ports.

Saturday afternoon saw a pleasant if shifty F2-3 westerly.  The Highcliffe sailors arrived as everyone else was already getting ready to launch, but Gary Langdown still made it to the start on time and won, followed home by Martin Frary and local sailor Alan Orton.

Simon Mussell made it to the line for race 2.  Frary was in the pack again and this time took first place, followed by Mussell and Langdown.

The final race of the day saw Robert Angus from Weston lead for most of the race.  But with big shifts there was always going to be a chance for place changes, and eventually Langdown sneaked through to win, followed by Mussell and Angus taking third.

The club organised an excellent “all you can eat” BBQ in the evening.

Sunday was again very shifty with slightly less wind.  Mike Murley lead race 4 from start to finish, pressed hard by Langdown and Angus, finishing in that order.

Overall winner, Langdown, decided to sit out the last one and leave it for a showdown between the 3 Weston sailors - Frary, Angus and Murley.  Angus won a hard fought race by less than a metre from Frary, followed by Murley.
