The largest Contender fleet for some years (23 boats) gathered at Weston sailing club over the weekend
and along with a smaller fleet of Byte CIIs sailed six races in challenging and at times frustrating conditions.
On Saturday the fleets were initialled kept ashore for one and a half hours due to the lack of wind but
eventually a breeze filled in and steadied sufficiently in direction for racing to take place on trapezoidal
courses in a light but still shifty breeze.
Only two races were achieved on the Saturday due to the delayed start; but despite a short delay on Sunday,
again waiting for the wind to settle, four races were achieved, two on trapezoidal courses followed by a
midday break for refreshments and then two sausage and triangle courses before the water started to disappear
due to the tide.
Stuart Jones from Datchet Water Sailing Club sailed consistently achieving three first places and two seconds
to take first place from Stuart Hudson of Keyhaven in second place sailing in the Contender fleet.
A former Weston member, Iain Horlock now sailing with Exe Sailing Club came third with Weston’s
veteran Keith Paul fourth overall.
